Memorial Day

Hey guys I just wanted to stop in and wish you all a very Happy Memorial Day! Today I'm with family and already enjoyed a parade, a walk around town, and a bike race, all while soaking up some much needed sun (my plan for the weekend). Hope you're all enjoying this beautiful day! Tonight will be more hanging out and BBQing. I recently came across these adorable coated canvas bags by Jonathan Adler and thought they'd be the perfect summer accessory (if it weren't for the price tag--ouch). Enjoy:

On the Topic of Offices...

I thought I'd continue on with my thought of a pink home office and give you a little workspace eye candy to round out your week. Enjoy:

Genius use of space.

Where's the flood?

I feel like this office also deserves a snarky comment, along the lines of:
"Got milk?"
"Why, yes I do. Right here in my handy decanter."

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! It will indeed be an exciting one for us...news to follow soon (hopefully)! My plan for this weekend is simple: get some sun on my pasty white skin. How about you?

Make Me Blush

I've decided that when/if we buy a house, I would like to have a pink room. But not just any ol' bubble gum pink will do. I want a soft blush pink, one that can take on different tones in different lighting. I don't want it to be over-the-top girly so to make it more like a subtle backdrop it will have to be mixed with a few harder pieces. Dan and I have already worked it out: he gets full reign in the garage and (part of) our future basement and I will get full control of either a guest bedroom or an office. Fair enough, no?

A page I ripped out of the most recent Better Homes & Gardens. Depending on how your monitor shows, I think the color on the bottom left is gorgeous- it's called Odessa from Ace Hardware.

So in order to keep it as guy-friendly as possible, here's what I'm envisioning:

Perfect mix of soft and hard

LOVE this

I think Nicole got it spot-on with Benjamin Moore's Wild Aster.

And while we're on the topic of future offices, what do you think about having your desk away from a wall? I really like the look of it but my big concern is that our desktop computer could get knocked over. Do any of you have your computer desks away from a wall? Or do you all lounge on your sofas with your laptops?

A perfect example from another pink room.

So what do you think of pink?

DIY Fail: Hermès Boxes

I have come across images like these multiple times and I am always drawn to those beautiful orange and black Hermès boxes.

So after taking these all in, I tried my hand at making my own DIY knock-off version. I already owned a bunch of shoe/jewelry boxes of various sizes so that part was free. And then due to my free Valspar samples, I actually had the perfect orange and black paint on hand which was a total coincidence. I started by painting what ended up being four coats of the orange onto three boxes. Then I taped off the edges so I could apply the black.

After removing the tape from the big box, all of the orange paint came up with the tape! Grr that sucked and I kinda thought it might happen but I took the risk anyways. Fail. So I threw the big one away and tried my luck at the smaller boxes. Lifting the tape didn't lift the paint on the small boxes--phew--but it did leave crazy wonky lines where the black paint was.

Not super terrible from afar....

But things got nasty up close

The only up side is that this project was completely free. The only thing I lost was all the time it took me to apply the four coats and tape out and paint the black. Just goes to show that not every DIY project turns out like you hope/expect. Anyone else have a DIY Fail recently? C'mon I can't be the only one.

Teeny Tiny Runner-Up

I love it when Apartment Therapy hosts their Small Cool contest because I get to browse through a whole bunch of awesome homes and get so many inspiring ideas. And if these people can make their teeny tiny, tiny, little, and small spaces so cool, then I feel I can do so much with my limited space as well. Here's one home that I particularly loved but unfortunately lost out in the end:

{I own that pink pillow- it's from Pier 1!}

This loft is too cool.

I love that they kept the walls white bit added lots and lots of color and texture.

New Life For An Old Stero Cabinet

So I have this stero cabinet. Or record console. Or whatever you want to call it, I've heard multiple combinations of both. We picked it up from a woman on Craiglist who was moving and basically giving everything away. We originally contacted her to purchase a vanity for my sister but when we arrived she said "Everything else is free, take what you want!" Like music to my ears. This woman's home was filled to the brim of mint condition mid-century and Swedish furniture (I believe she was Dutch) but unfortunately most of that stuff was already sold or not for sale. So that is how we obtained a cool vintage stereo cabinet for $Free.99. And when did we actually get it? Oh about TEN months ago back in July!

See I don't even own records but the piece was too cool to pass up at that price. My plan all along was to gut it and make it either a buffet of some sort or maybe just a display surface with hidden storage, accessible from the top. I don't have any pictures of it right now, I'll have to take some, but after finding this on Apartment Therapy it got me thinking again about my ol cabinet and the oportunities it holds, rather than collecting dust like it is currently doing.

This is how mine would be, with top-accessible storage.

I will try to take some pictures of it this weekend and show you guys what I'm working with/ get some imput as to how exactly I should tackle it. Here's another example of what mine looks like with the top the slides open.

Have a great weekend everybody!

I ♥ White Kitchens

There's just something about the open airy feel that white cabinets lend to a kitchen that really draws me in. They especially make small spaces feel larger (which is a plus for us) as well as clean and bright. Yeah they may necessitate the use of some extra Clorox wipes, but if you look below, you'll agree that it's totally worth it. Enjoy:

That table and chair set? Amazingly contrasting with the clean white lines.

Love this gray subway backsplash.

That herringbone backsplash is stunning and the pot filler is such a cool feature.

Love the birds and the oversized light fixture.

The floors, the pendants, the jars...I love it all.

The marble counters, the farmhouse sink, the milk bottles...

I'm not a huge red fan but I love it here used as a pop against the white.

Love these painted floors.

Wood counters are gorgeous against white.

So what do you guys think? Are you fans of white or are you more into the wood tones?
Or maybe a fun painted color floats your boat?
