All day at work yesterday it was bright and sunny and I couldn't wait to get home and get crackin on my bookshelves since the past couple days have been unpredictable on and off rain. Four o'clock rolls around and what do you know...torrential downpour and I'm soaked before I even get to my car. Awesome. Things took a turn for the best though and by the time I got home the skies cleared up and I was able to get in a couple hours of sanding time and finished both bookshelves- woot!
You'll see here that I also removed the paneled backs and love how clean-lined they are without the 70's panelling holding them back. Now they're timeless and will be just lovely with a couple coats of white paint. Still undecided about what to do on the wall behind them but for now I'm leaning towards leaving it as is since I really do love the color (Wheat Bread) and anything white will pop ever so nicely against it. We'll see where I end up on that later on. Even so it's a simple change if I ever feel the urge to paint even months from now!
One major plus about removing the back is that now our cable wire is easily accessible-- and easily hidden when the doors are on. Any other electrical device can also be stored here and secretly plugged in behind the future bench so no one's the wiser.
When sanding I took extra time on these two areas because I figured they would get the most abuse. I really want the primer and paint to hold on real nice for the long haul.
Even though I sanded, there were still a few areas I missed or kind of purposefully neglected (like the top of the top shelf) so I took the extra time to use a liquid deglosser on the entire piece.
Everything's all prepped and laid out for the next step...primer! Exciting stuff going on over here.
Have a great weekend everybody!
