Awesome Afters

Have I got a treat for all of you! I've shown two Awesome Afters in the past (here and here) and now have a third for your viewing pleasure. My friend Marcella took her dining room from crazy country to eclectic mod and it just turned out great! I'll let her tell the story...

"Here is what the dining room looked like, in all its glory, when we first moved in before painting or anything - preeety bad! Really don't know what the previous home owners were thinking.

We had gotten our dining room set for SUPER cheap when we first got married at a discount furniture store. Never really loved it - I always thought it had a country feel, but I'm so not a country decor girl.

The credenza is probably my most amazing find! I love all things mid-century modern and had been searching for a cheap mid-century credenza I could update for months upon months! And then, as I was driving home from work one afternoon it was meant to be - this piece was sitting on the side of the road in my neighborhood! I immediately pulled over and thank God the homeowner was outside gardening and I didn't care how embarrassing, but I asked him if he would help me put it in my car. haha! He laughed at me and got his brother inside and they put it in my SUV for me. I literally drove home with this piece hanging out of my car at about 5 mph with the fear a bump would knock it out with a giant smile on my face so proud of my trash pick! It was a little beat up and scratched, so unfortunately I couldn't keep the original walnut finish on the drawers/doors, but I'm thrilled with the end result! I was able to sand it all down and paint it up and now it looks lovely in its new home.

I had collected mirrors, plates, and objects over time from thrift shops, Homegoods, etc. and had been saving them for about year waiting for the opportunity to redo the dining room. I laid everything out on the floor first to see the arrangement for the wall, traced it onto wrapping paper, and hung that to get an idea of how it all would come together before actually hanging.

The method takes a little bit more time, but in the end pays off because then my husband doesn't have to hear me say "A little to the left, to the right a pinch, up, up, down just a hair..." haha! I love elephants and was so unbelievable excited when I scored this solid wooden elephant from a thrift shop near my parents - sometimes I just stare at him in all his elephant goodness.

Since my husband and I love photography, we have always collected vintage cameras and had them displayed on shelves in our office. About a year ago, I had spotted on Pinterest an old mail sorter that was redone into a camera holder. We really have no room for something like that, so when Josh found this one online my heart dropped. It was perfect! Love the little numbers on it, the rustic wood, and the cameras fit perfectly!

We have collected the objects on the credenza over time and each one has some meaning to it for us. The dining table, dining chairs, and jar chandelier are all from West Elm, my home away from home. I love the mix of the rustic/modern farm table with the white mid-century look-alike chairs.

Everything came together and I couldn't be happier! :) I'm sure it will evolve even more with time, but I am one happy girl. I'm glad I could pass all of this along to you- hope you enjoy!"

Didn't Marcella do an excellent job? If I had to pick a favorite I think I'd have to go with the jar chandelier since I feel it really makes the space. Honestly though I lover her attention to detail and how everything is special and purposeful.

If you have any Awesome Afters you'd like to share email me @ mysocalledhome{at}yahoo{dot}com. I'd love to see what you guys are up to!
