2012 Year In Review

AKA: What we accomplished in the last 365 days! This past year has meant a lot of changes both for Dan and I personally as well as our home. Here's a little recap of our 2012:

January:

  • While still working hard to finish up the kitchen we completed a few smaller projects in the meantime, one of my favorite's being the butterflies in our bathroom:

February:
  • This was actually a busy month for us and to start off the new year fresh we replaced our old wobbly, paint-peeling dining room chairs with lovely metal ones found on Craigslist (where else...):

March:

  • Although the kitchen is fully functional at this point (new cabinets, counter tops, hardware, and appliances) we still wanted to add a little open storage above the sink and found the perfect solution in this rustic shelf from HomeGoods:

April:

May:

  • My dressing area officially became a room with the addition of new vinyl plank floors (just in time to be turned into a nursery one year later!):

June:
  • Thanks to my very good friend, this gorgeous Federal mirror came to live in our house all the way from Delaware:

  • I added a little free paint chip art to our bedroom for a nice pop of color:

July:

  • We finally replaced the broken chandelier in our dining room with the ever-lovely Eden pendant from cB2:

  • The day we hung and painted the door for our coat closet was a very happy day. Finally we could walk in the front door and not be immediately greeted with a open closet full of coats, bags, and our vacuum! Hooray!

August:
  • We finished the built-ins after many weeks of brainstorming, sanding, painting, and trimming:

September:

  • This month also included a little getaway to Cape Cod to secretly celebrate our newest DIY project: the news that we were expecting our first baby!

October:
  • Our living room console got spooked-out for Halloween:

November:

December:

  • And perhaps the most exciting thing to happen to me this year (aside from the news of our little peanut) was being featured on Young House Love! I submitted our built-in project way back in the summer so when it went live at the end of December it was the biggest and best shock ever. And a hearty Welcome! goes out to all my newest Followers-- so nice to meet you all.

So there ya have it- our past year in a nut shell. Obviously plenty more projects, thrifty finds, and room ideas happened so feel free to browse my Archives or Projects page to see even more! As always we're looking forward to the next year to see how our lives and home will change for the better.

Merry Christmas!

From our {growing} family to yours:

I want to share with you the lyrics of one of my favorite Christmas carols because the words ring ever so true especially in these dark days:

"I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep!
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men."

God bless you all this Christmas season!

DIY Neighbor Christmas Gifts

Happy Christmas Eve everybody! Only one more sleep until the big day and that means all last minute shopping needs to be finished and wrapped up as soon as possible (myself included). I just wanted to drop in real quick and share with you the simple gift idea we came up with to share with our neighbors, originally seen here but adapted in many ways if you search it on Pinterest.

I gathered up my supplies: treat bags and m+m's from Hobby Lobby, a slab of Christmas scrapbooking paper I've had for years, paper cutter, tape, and stapler.

Making these were super simple and kinda self-explanatory so here they are:

It tells The Christmas Story in such a beautiful and fun way.

We made six total and included our address to make sure our neighbors knew where the gifts were coming from (but blocked it out for security purposes, naturally). Now all we need to do is pass them out and finish getting ready for tomorrow!

Christmas House Tour 2012

Welcome! Kick off your shoes, make yourselves at home and feel free to snoop around:

Our simple entry greets you at the door with a trio of silver trees and pair of reindeer.

Our modern woodland tree, complete with DIY'ed ornaments, rustic tree branches, and a touch of red.

I love the reflection in the window...

Patiently waiting...

I finally got to break out my red thrift store tin!
The silver stars are from Target.

DIY'ed cone tree and small silver star (from Sears).

I love my little woodland scene on the console complete with DIY'ed tree limb candle holders.

Our DIY'ed advent calendar, back in the beginning of December.
Now almost all the ornaments are on the tree!

Even the kitchen pass-through got in on the festivities...

...as well as the bathroom.

All ready for Santa!
